  1. First up this isn’t medical advice, just advice.

I had elective surgery on my Inguinal hernia, and I chose the open surgery with mesh repair. The keyhole repair seemed like it had more reported reoccurrences, and the repairs without mesh are unsuitable for lifters. I wish I had the other side done preemptively, since Inguinal hernias are congenital. Talk to your surgeon about this, then research online. I went with the Melbourne Hernia Clinic to get mine fixed, I didn’t trust some random surgeon the G.P would have recommended me to.

As I was getting put under, the surgeons’ assistant was shaving my pubic hair. Don’t get freaked out when the doctors and nurses are talking about random stuff like something out of a Greys Anatomy episode.

The first few hours after are all right, you just feel like you have been cut open. I was still pretty high for the first hour, and got kicked out of post op. Here’s where I started to go wrong. DO NOT FUCKING LAY DOWN. I lay down on the couch, feeling pretty good. The general was still numbing everything, all was good, all was fine. Fast forward to the evening and I couldn’t get up. Remember since they cut near your abdominals, ANY time your use them, shit hurts. Lay down on the couch now and try get up without them accidentally tensing. So for the first night of two, I would suggest getting a reclining chair to sleep/sit in. The painkillers they give you are awesome, I just took some whenever I woke up, and they put me back to sleep within 15minutes.

GET SOME TIGHT FITTING UNDERWEAR. This is very important. I shit you not, without exaggerating; my balls swelled up double the size. I only wear loose cotton briefs, and walking around was a nightmare. My nuts where purple, full of blood, and huge for the first week.

Use the laxatives they give you, pooing isn’t much fun.

Clean your house, get clean bed sheets, dust, shake out rugs, etc. I had phlegm for the first few days, which was not fun (you use them damn abs to de-phlegm) I coughed about 4 times, very little fun. Thank FUCK I didn’t sneeze. Clean that house reeeaalllll well. If you do happen to sneeze, can you report how it felt to my log please, for the lols.

Start moving around ASAP, I didn’t want the scar healing with me laying still. It might be broscience, but so many people online say their scar still hurts years on. Mine doesn’t, so take that for whatever. I can’t do decline sit-ups without it feeling weird though.

Make sure you get all the receipts that are tax deductible.

It really isn’t as bad as I’m making it out to be. Don’t get depressed that you will never be able to lift again like I did.

Wash your dick the night before surgery, that’s just good manners.

    1. HAHAHA. Thanks heaps for the man. However, after spending about 3 hours researching on PubMed, I've decided that because mine is asymptomatic (no pain, no lump, no nothing - I still wouldn't even know I had one if I hadn't had the ultrasound for the cortisone injection into my bursa) and I've presumably had it for at least a year already, I'm going to opt for "watchful waiting" instead of having it repaired. Check out this medical literature:

      http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16418463
      http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21298308

Basically, the risk of strangulation (which is all I was really concerned about) is like 0.3%, yet the risk of complications arising from the surgery (nerve damage, infection etc) is anywhere from 5 - 10%. So until I experience some pain or other complications from the hernia, it just doesn't make sense to fuck around with it.

Also, I'm already depressed that I'll never lift again because of this fucking SI joint inflammation I've got going on :(

  2. Just so you know, my brother had his strangulate in the middle of an ocean when he was working on the fishing trawlers 10+years ago. They had to get a chopper to fly him in and get him to hospital. I had no pain, and a huge lump. I reckon I have it on the other side, but have opted to just wait, like you. I really was hoping you would sneeze though.

Try this for your SI crappieness. Healed mine up that was bothering me for a few months. Did it twice a day, and still do it before lifting everyday.

    1. Fuck man, it's no wonder you got yours repaired then.

Thanks for that video. I've already been doing heaps of mobility work this last week and I have promised myself that even once this bullshit gets better, I'm taking my warm ups and mobility work as seriously as I take my lifting. I'm not getting any younger and if I want to keep lifting and achieve my goals, I have to keep my body in good working order. 30 minute mobility session EVERY DAY.
