Realization Week 2, Day 3

- Bench: 116 x 1/120 x 0

Comments:

I honestly thought I was going to hit 120 after 116 came up quite fast. It just didn't happen however. 116 was technically the most proficient that weight has been this entire block, which is one thing to be happy about.

I am disappointed with how my bench has responded these past 12 weeks, however I'm past being devastated. Mistakes were made and lesson have been learned.

  1. What mistakes were made?

What program you doing after the meet?

  2. The main mistake made in regards to my bench was basing the percentages on my TnG max instead of my paused max. In all fairness though, I was aware that this would be problematic at the beginning, however Jordan thought it shouldn't matter too much and so I followed his advice. Secondly, I need to be pausing ALL my reps. TnG is completely irrelevant to powerlifting, other than perhaps serving to overload the movement. Thirdly, I need to simply bench MORE. Straight weight, more frequency, more volume (same for my squat).

So moving forward we will be making these changes. I am going to stay with Jordan for another 6 months until my next meet in November and we are going to set up some kind of daily undulating periodization (DUP) in which I bench and squat, eventually, up to 5 times a week, at varying volumes and intensities (and in specific blocks).

  3. Yeah bench frequency seems to work for me as well. 1 heavy flat bench and 1 heavy floor press a week has been giving me PR's lately after dropping 20KG of BW.

Jordan seems pretty smart. Are you getting nutrition advice as well, or is that not included in the consult fee?

5 days a week will be interesting to watch. Mike Tuchscherer recommends you swap to 5-6 days a week every now and then to swap things up if you only train 3-4 days a week. If it works for you I might give it a go.

  4. Yeah Jordan is a super smart dude. The fee I paid was for programming only, however he has been pretty generous with any relevant nutrition advice along the way. My diet pretty much follows his recommendations anyway, eg: tracking macros, high days/low days, small increases/decreases in carbs/fats, BCAAs between meals etc.

The 5 days a week will only be for certain blocks and will be gradually worked up to. I chatted with Jordan on Skype this morning and I'm looking forward to moving forward and I think he's excited about experimenting with DUP.
